What is going on in Zambia?
Zambia, rich in natural resources and cultural diversity, still faces deep inequality for children and youth with disabilities. Stigma, poverty, weak systems, and slow policy implementation leave many families without support. In rural areas, access to healthcare, education, and rehabilitation is especially limited. Despite progressive laws, inclusion often remains on paper, particularly for girls and those in poor communities.
Facts and figures
- Only 1 in 5 children with disabilities use assistive technology
- Over 80% of rural residents live below the poverty line
- Only 4 occupational therapists serve the entire country
- Most first-level hospitals lack rehabilitation services
- Stigma from teachers and communities drives children with disabilities out of school
